In connection with this discovery, researchers in a 1997 study showed that EGCG, the powerful active ingredient in green tea, is as much as twice as effective at blocking the unwanted effects of smoking and high-fat eating as is resveratrol. This may also help to explain why the heart disease rate among Japanese men is so low as well, despite estimates that as much as 75% of the population can be classified as regular smokers.
Green tea is preventative: Not only of heart disease, but of various cancers too
Studies have also shown that regular green tea consumption can also reduce the risk of cancer. A recent report undergone in Japan concluded that males over age eighteen who were regularly drinking ten cups a day were statistically free of cancer for up to three years longer than those who did not, within a control group of people genetically predisposed to protracting cancer.
Green tea can also help curb the effects of rheumatoid arthritis
Anyone well-acquainted with the daily suffering rheumatoid arthritis can appreciate the soothing elements of green tea as well. A study conducted at Cleveland’s Western Reserve University found that consuming at least four cups of green tea a day could help prevent rheumatoid arthritis altogether in those not already afflicted by it, and it could significantly reduce the symptoms in current sufferers.
